چکیده

We motivate searches for gravitational waves from transient blazar flares with emphasis on PKS 2155-304. PKS 2155-304 is a blazar with redshift approximately equal to 0.12. On July 28 2006, the H.E.S.S. atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes detected an outburst of TeV gamma rays from this object lasting approximately two hours with total isotropic equivalent energy released in TeV gamma rays (without accounting for attenuation with infrared photons) approximately 10 ergs. During this period, the two LIGO detectors at Hanford and GEO were running and collecting science mode data. We propose to look for gravitational waves during this gamma-ray outburst with the RIDGE network analysis pipeline. Simulated detector noise is used to study the performance achievable by RIDGE in measuring possible gravitational wave signals associated with this event. Measuring parameters of AGN central engines with very high energy γ-ray flares

We discuss a ”compact source” model of very high energy (VHE) emission from blazars in which the variability time is determined by the blazar central engine. In this model electron or proton acceleration close to the supermassive black hole is followed by the development of electromagnetic cascade in a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. Assuming such a model for the TeV blazar PKS 2155-304...

Ja n 20 07 X – ray / UV / Optical follow - up of the blazar PKS 2155 – 304 after the giant TeV flares of July 2006

We present all the publicly available data, from optical/UV wavelengths (UVOT) to X–rays (XRT, BAT), obtained from Swift observations of the blazar PKS 2155–304, performed in response to the rapid alert sent out after the strong TeV activity (up to 17 Crab flux level at E > 200 GeV) at the end of July 2006. The X-ray flux increased by a factor of 5 in the 0.3−10 keV energy band and by a factor ...

Synchrotron - Self Compton Spectral Evolution of PKS 2155 - 304

The high frequency peaked blazar PKS 2155-304 is one of the brightest and most intensively studied prototype of BL Lac objects. Gamma-rays from PKS 2155-304 have been detected from the MeV to TeV ranges. We computed a synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, based on the temporal behavior of the particles distribution, responsible for the high-energy emission. Using the available simultaneous mult...

The emission of blazars in very - high - energy gamma - rays viewed as a random stationary process : the case of PKS 2155 - 304

With the advent of the new generation of Cherenkov telescopes such as H.E.S.S., MAGIC, CANGAROO III and VERITAS, about 20 active galactic nuclei belonging to the blazar category have been clearly detected at very high energies. Spectacular flares were observed in a few of them, such as Mkn 421, Mkn 501 and PKS 2155-304, during which gamma-ray fluxes could be sampled with time intervals of a few...

Four Years Monitoring of Blazar PKS 2155−304 with BeppoSAX: Probing the Dynamics of the Jet

PKS 2155–304 is one of the brightest blazars in the X-ray band. It was repeatedly monitored with BeppoSAX during three long campaigns of about 2 days each in November of 1996, 1997 and 1999. The source underwent different states of intensity and was clearly variable with successive flares detected. This paper presents temporal and spectral analysis to study the X-ray variability trends for a bl...
